Flame Retardant
Swiftec are committed to safety on construction sites and with this in mind, we are dedicated to identifying products that comply to the Joint Code of Practice 7th edition, which includes products which have been certified and accredited by either the LPCB to LPS1207 standard or Certifire.
The requirements for products to be flame retardant and conform to the Joint Code of Practice rests on the company who is responsible for the insurance of the site even if the protection is not installed by them.
What is the Joint Code of Practice?
The Joint Code of practice is designed to help prevent fires on construction sites and is published by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) and is available from the BRE Bookshop.
Failure to comply
Failure to comply could result in insurance being withdrawn or uninsured losses on site.
LPS1207
LPS1207 is the standard issued by the Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB) and is one of the standards recognized by the Joint Code of Practice for products to be certified and approved to for all temporary protective coverings used in construction and refurbishment projects. These must also be printed with the LPCB logo and certificate number in characters of not less than 25mm high on the entire product face.
Certifire
Certifire have now had their standard CF685 technical schedule TF6 approved by the Joint Code of Practice and is now recognized as fully accredited alternative to the LPCB. This standard is similar to the LPS 1207 but measures more stringently the toxic gasses released.

Areas to look out for
Recent changes to the LPS1207 certification standard means that it is more difficult to get custom printed products approved. Some companies do not print the face with the recognized size of characters the standard states that the wording “Flame Retardant satisfies LPS1207” must be 25mm high, also some companies say that their product meets LPS1207 but there is no certification. This is not covered by the Joint Code of Practice and therefore not an LPS1207 product. Certifire registration only became live this year as from May 2009 and many companies may be unsure that they are covered however this is fully approved and certified and accepted by the Joint Code of Practice.
